With so much of Season 2 devoted to finding Appa, the fact that Aang is willing to let him go so easily while holding fast to his feelings for Katara makes no sense, and when the show has focused on the strength of teamwork, it would be more realistic for Aang to be unable to let his entire 'found family' go.
